Should I stay in Urban Central Backpackers or Base St. Kilda in Melbourne?

I am going to Melbourne with my girlfriend for 10 days.

st kilda is a notorious red light area, make sure you are together and your luggage etc. is secure, there are some safe places , so make enquiries at the catholic church in grey st.

Depends what you’re looking for when choosing a hostel! :D

There are some great reviews on hostelworld.com and they are very honest! Most hostels are pretty decent, but if it is location you are looking for, you may want to consider some of the properties in the actual city.

If high standards for cleanliness and safety are your main concerns, you should have a look at YHA hostels. You can check those out online at yha.com.au. There are two YHAs in North Melbourne, which are fantastic. YHA is also opening up a new hostel in the CBD in April.

    Hope that helps!

St Kilda is not that dodgy anymore. It’s actually become very trendy in the last few years. It’s got heaps of places for backpackers to stay in. There’s only few streets that have got the prostitutes in them and they are not the main tourist streets.

I would recommend staying in St Kilda. It’s such a cool area with heaps of nice pubs, restaurants, cafes. Acland Street is great. It’s nice to stay close to it and then there is of course Luna Park and the beach. It’s also easy to commute from St Kilda into the city. You just hop onto a tram. Doesn’t take that long. Take a look at the site below:

*Don’t stay at the Backpackers Hostel in Spencer St (Melbourne City). Me and my sisters stayed there last year and it’s filthy. It was so horrible and not that cheap.

I really like St Kilda and there are lots of backpackers around, lots of food choices, lots of bars, the beach etc. It is just a bit out of the way if you want to explore other parts of the city. But having said that, trams run into the city from St Kilda all the time so not hard, just a little hassle.
