What type of people support the following clubs?

I’m curious to know what type of demographic factors, nationality background, economic factors etc, come into play when people choose to barrack for certain Melbourne based AFL clubs.

Collingwood, Carlton, Essendon, Geelong, Hawthorn, Melbourne, North Melbourne, Richmond, St Kilda and Western Bulldogs

Predominately we follow the clubs that we are brought up in, that is what our parents follow. Whether it be the suburbs they lived in or teams they worked for and so on. Some people follow teams that win many games or the most premierships… many people like to be winners! I for instance follow the underdogs on the day and in the long term.

I would say that it would have to do with either personal experience of watching the club and liking them or having a friend or family member who supports the same team. But economic factors doesn’t have anything to do with it, in my opinion. Although, back in the olden days (apparently) Collingwood supporters were referred to as the “low life” supporters. (not making that up).

Demographic factors don’t really vary because they are all Melbourne based clubs. Nationality factors? well maybe someone might choose a team because they have a player from the same nationality in it. For example, someone born in Ireland might support Sydney because of T Kennelly and someone aboriginal might like a player like Bachar Houli and support Essendon, someone from Fiji might like Naitanui etc.

it has a lot to do with either your family. or your class mates from when you went to school.
or perhaps if you where undecided. it would depend on who is up there and playing finals footy at the time. when you made a choice.
a lot of these suburbs in melbourne have a very high ethnic population now. who wouldn’t know much about afl footy. i just cant see to many indian, pakistani or asians playing footy in the near future.
    cheers mate.

PIES: Working Australians, God-fearing, taxpayers, people who don’t like being part of the in-crowd and know what “loyalty” means!
BLUES: Dole bludgers, the mentally ill, the perverted and a mix of kindy and primary school drop-outs. Bogans!
    BOMBERS: The blind.
CATS: Same as Carlton, only worse!
HAWTHORN: The colour-blind (together with the Dockers).
DEMONS: The chardonnay sippers (like the Eagles).
    ROOS: The self pitiful.
TIGERS: The wannabe junkies & former female Eagles supporters.
    SAINTS: Bible bashers.
DOGGIES: People who enjoy living in public housing.

That really is a stupid question to ask. Every club has it’s ferals, bandwagoners who come out of the woodwork only when the team is going well, loyal supporters who stay there through thick and thin.
