Young Family moving to Melbourne (VIC) can anyone suggest a good suburb to live in?

Last time we lived in Melbourne we lived in St Kilda, which we loved because of the bars, cafes and beach there, but that was before we had a kid. We’d like to live somewhere with good transport links to the centre , good outside bits (beach or parks), cafes and bars a bit of life and a nice community. Any ideas would be great, thanks!

I live in the eastern suburbs, balwyn to be exact. I’m 15 and growing up in this area has been fantastic. My house is 100m from a bus stop and a short walk to the tram, train station and a number of other buses. They all go into the city and everywhere else of course. If i was asked to go somewhere in Melbourne I can guarantee I could get there by public transport. To get to school I only have to catch one bus, but some of my friend who live in Templestowe and Doncaster have to catch up to 4 buses because of the lack of public transport. Where are also situated in the middle of universities including melbourne, monash, la trobe and deakin. When your kids are older you will be VERY grateful if you live near unis. I have no joke 5 park within a short walk from my house 4 of them with play equipment. I also have an oval that has a number of sports clubs, cricket nets, basketball and netball courts and a playground. There are cafes everywhere, and the community is fantastic. Every time we go to the supermarket there are always people we know saying hi to us and having a chat. We know them through school, sporting clubs and a number of other things. There are always people out walking and are always friendly. So my reccomendation is the middle eastern suburbs, including camberwell, cantebury, surrey hills, balwyn, mont albert and any other suburb in that area. They only down side is that the houses are more exspensive than in say the northen and western suburbs, particularly canterbury and camberwell. But there are still some lovely houses in other suburbs nearby.
